I love traveling and have learned a lot from my trips. Seeing the powers of Velazquez’s ‘Pope Innocent X’; the sheen of the material, the apparent movement in the subject’s hand. The beautiful stillness and light in Vermeer’s’ Woman Reading A Letter’ the humour and cinematic quality of Hopper’s ‘Soir Bleu’ in person has affected not only my passion, but the way in which I treat my subjects.
I paint people from film and modern culture as well as people I know. If they fit into the scene I’m trying to create, then I cast them. The landscapes may change in my work, but it’s the emotion underneath that’s important to me.
